Extensions in Loughton

Loughton has the plots for it. Many of the houses on the roads running up from the High Road sit on generous gardens with side access, which makes a rear or wrap-around extension straightforward to build and considerably cheaper than the same job on a terrace.

Loft conversions

Loughton has had a great many loft conversions and there is still plenty of roof space worth using. The usual answer on a 1930s semi is a rear dormer giving a double bedroom and shower room, with a hip-to-gable where the roof shape allows. See our loft conversions page.

Planning in Loughton

Loughton falls under Epping Forest District Council, not a London borough, and the rules are not identical to those a few miles south. Plenty of single-storey rear extensions go up under permitted development, but that depends on depth, height, boundary distance and whether the house has been extended before.

Two things catch people out locally. Parts of Loughton sit within conservation areas, where permitted development rights are reduced. And properties bordering Epping Forest land can carry additional constraints.
