Builders in Epping

Brick By Brick are builders working across Epping and the Epping Forest district. Extensions are the bulk of what we are asked for here, alongside renovations and loft conversions in a mix of period and more modern housing.

Extensions in Epping

Epping plots tend to be generous, which opens up options that are not available closer in to London. We build single-storey rear extensions, double-storey where a bedroom is needed above, and wrap-arounds that take in the side return as well.

The constraint here is less often space than character. Epping has a lot of older housing, and an extension that ignores the original building looks wrong however well it is built. Matching brick, keeping eaves and ridge lines sensible, and getting window proportions right matter as much as the structure. See our extensions page.

Period properties and listed buildings

Epping has a number of listed buildings, particularly around the High Street, and several conservation areas. This is the first thing to establish, because it changes what can be built, what it can be built from, and how long consent takes.

It rarely stops a project. It does mean the design work happens before anything else, materials are specified more carefully, and the programme allows for a longer consent period. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, we will say so at the first visit rather than quoting as though it were a standard job.

Renovations

A good share of our Epping work is a whole house rather than one room: rewire, replumb, new kitchen and bathrooms, floors, joinery and decoration. In older properties this often uncovers things nobody could have seen beforehand — poor previous work, damp, failed lintels — so we build a contingency into the conversation at the start rather than presenting it as a surprise later. See renovations.

Bathrooms and kitchens

Where the structure is sound, the work is often a bathroom or kitchen done properly: new layout, first fix, tiling, and the finish that makes the difference. We handle these as complete jobs rather than leaving you to coordinate a plumber, a tiler and an electrician yourself.

Planning and building control

Epping is under Epping Forest District Council. A lot of single-storey rear extensions proceed under permitted development, subject to depth, height and boundary distance, and whether the house has been extended before. Conservation area status reduces those rights, and listed building consent is a separate process from planning.

We arrange building control and structural calculations as part of the job. We will also be straight with you at the first visit about which route your project needs and roughly how long consent is likely to take.

Loft conversions

Dormer and hip-to-gable conversions both work well on the inter-war housing around Epping, typically producing a double bedroom with an en suite. On older or listed properties the options are narrower and worth discussing before you plan around the extra room. See loft conversions.
