Brick By Brick are builders working across Chigwell, Chigwell Row and Grange Hill. The housing here is mostly larger detached and semi-detached property on generous plots, so the work tends to be bigger than it is a few miles into London — full renovations, substantial rear and side extensions, and kitchens and bathrooms finished to a high standard.

Extensions in Chigwell

The plots are the reason extensions work well here. Most houses have proper side access and a decent depth of garden, which keeps the build straightforward and the cost per square metre lower than the same job on a terrace.

What we are asked for most:

Single-storey rear — opening the back of the house into one kitchen and dining space, usually with a roof light or two over the middle
Side and wrap-around — taking in the side return as well as the rear, which the wider plots around Manor Road and Vicarage Lane will take comfortably
Double-storey — a bedroom and often an en suite above the new ground floor, better value per square metre than building out twice

Whole-house renovations

A good share of our Chigwell work is a house bought and taken back to brick — rewire, replumb, new kitchen and bathrooms, floors, joinery and decoration, often with an extension running in the same programme. On the larger Chigwell houses the kitchen is usually the centre of the job, and it is worth getting the sequence right: the stone templated only once the units are set, the services first-fixed before plastering, the flooring laid before the island goes down. Planning in Chigwell

Chigwell falls under Epping Forest District Council, not a London borough, and the rules are not the same as those a few miles south.

Two things catch people out locally. A large part of the parish sits in the green belt, where extensions are judged against limits on how much bigger the original house becomes, and a scheme that would pass without comment elsewhere can need a careful application here. Parts of Chigwell also sit within conservation areas, where permitted development rights are reduced.

Plenty of single-storey rear extensions still go up under permitted development, but it depends on depth, height, boundary distance and whether the house has been extended before. We will tell you at the first visit which route your job needs, and we handle building control and structural calculations as part of the work.
